On April 20th, 2007 the last broadcast of CBS2 news aired from the Columbia Square facility in Hollywood Ca. After 69 years this building has given way to a brand new broadcast center at the CBS studios in Studio City. There, it will broadcast the local KCBS/KCAL news shows. A couple of years ago KNX newsradio ended its long tenancy to move to new digs on Wilshire Bl. For some of my colleagues and I, it was our home away from home, where we worked and in essence, grew up and flourished as journalists. Just about every major news personality around the country has worked at Columbia Square at one time or another. It's been 28 years for me. Since the KNXT days. You can't deny the rich history of the place as celebs and stars of radio, television and music passed through it doors since the late 30's. This video is a reminder of it's distinct character and its service to those who will always have fond memories of the "Square". Enjoy and remember.

This was beautifully put together. MUCH better than any of the tributes that actually aired ON KCBS or KCAL. A wonderful, wonderful tribute that brought back many memories of my time working there many years ago.

I agree Alex43499 this is done quite well. KTTV-11 made a half hour special about there move from Metromedia Square to there current studio back in 96, I'm surprised that CBS2-KCAL9 didn't do something like that because they pitched it as a big thing for them. I'm surprised no one hasn't done a video tribute on here for KCAL9 (KHJ) during there years at the Melrose Ave. studio.

no, dingding3109 , idol is not and was never taped at the old facility much least at the new building. i think it was at the kodak building on hollywood bl.

Dingdong3109 & pettie25, Idol is taped at CBS Television City in LA's Fairfax District (same as Price is Right, Young & the Restless, and Bold and the Beautiful. Columbia Square was KCBS/KCAL (and formerly KNX & KCBS-FM) local stations. The Idol finale was at the Kodak.

Even though I never worked at Columbia Square I loved the place dearly; it had real, authentic Hollywood glamour, not the manufactured kind. My TV viewing goes back to original Jerry Dunphy days, and I remember when KNX's all-news format was just beginning. I had no idea that the building's interior was as unique and quirky as the outside. It must have been a wonderful place to work. This was beautifully done and many of us are grateful to you.

This is the BEST video of ALL on YouTube. I worked KNX for one year until I left for AT&T. I loved the fact you didn't miss anything. Even though I was sad that KNX had to move, the building will be saved from a wrecking ball. It's legacy will always live on in those who worked here, incl. me who came in thru the corner stairway that creaked at 3am for the morning news & the video library to see the steps where seats used to be for Jack Benny Show. THANKS

I remember this building well through the 60's on up..
Saw a great episode of Carol Burnett being taped there, while she was away from Television City...Also
Columbia Records Recording Studios, etc. What a rich history this building had, from it's radio shows in the 40's to early tv(along with it's companion audience studio at 1313 N Vine) where KNXT "cautiously presented" Carson's Cellar...lol
that would have been on the right side of the building.

Wow! I worked in that building for about five years. I hate to think of it being torn down. I felt a little emotional seeing my old KNX traffic studio all gutted out like that.

Boy, what a dump... bet you had alot of dust in the building... Kinda looks like CNBC's last studios in Fort Lee, NJ after they moved to brand new digs in Englewood Cliffs.... But Columbia Square at least had a glamorous history... but god, the depressing stairwell and signs of a bad 1980s remodeling...

Simply...thank you. You have never lived until you were on the roof of Columbia Square on a Saturday night. And yes: Black, White and Gray are the colors of the Columbia Broadcasting System.
