Arthas was driven mad by the might of the Scourge. He thought they couldn't be beat so he decided to be on the winning side. The lich king knew this all along thats why he gave him the sword frostmourne which was a piece of the lich king. Later on Arthas returns frostmourned and becomes the lich king.

arthas just wanted power enough to save his land from the undead, so he took up the sword, but the sword took his soul overtime and eventually turned him evil... later the lich king used arthas to obtain a new physical form again

The thing about Arthas is he's a man of action. Once he decides on a course of action, he'll allow no one to stand in his way. He never knew when to stop - he just kept going and going. The Frostmourne was his point of no return.

The second he picks up the Frostmourne his soul / humanity is stripped from him.
From that moment onwards - the real Arthas ceases to exist. The Death knight that terrorizes Lorderon simply whats left of his body. I think it would be interesting to see what would happen if he ever got his soul back.
