I'm not claiming to be able to play this any better, but this guy shouldn't be going out in public playing this music. I own the score and followed along, not only is he ignoring numerous dynamic markings, but his technical problems are too numerous to count. Forget about all the missed notes, his tempo, legato, pedal technique. All lack consistency and clarity. Ravel is turning over in his grave. Anyone who wants to hear how this piece is actually supposed to be played should be Werner Haas.

ahahaha the fact that Gavrilov doesn't actually take credit for these wrong notes/rhythms/dynamics is simply a reflection of his selfless personality, because they sound infinitely better than Ravel's written ones.

I bet Ravel would like his interpretation though.Although he interpreted it "abnormaly",and "overly showy", I guess he found
his own way to show the "scarbo" who is a lil ghost/monster that annoys people! he, in this video, looks like scarbo.

Do you realize what you've just said!? Dude, if someone goes performs and shakespeare with incorrect pronunciation, words, and emotional interpretation, that doesn't make them selfless, it makes them an amateur, i.e. not worthy to make a living performing. I imagine you use that same justification for your butchering of chopin opus 10 no. 4 that you put up on metacafe. Being selfless isn't the same thing as being lazy, man. Keep practicing...

yo... it's till a work of impressionist which
has many ways to interprete.. I understand why you are degrading this interpretation.. It's not a Shakepeare which has to be pronounced or perfomed in a uniform or set way....
Ravel himself said, ...( 1 month ago by Pianobyme)
Ravel himself said, "do not interpret my music, play it." It has also been said that there are infinite ways of playing Debussy but only one way of playing Ravel. I agree with both of these statements. I dont think he does a very good job, despite its uniqueness. I dont think its Scarbo at all... have you read the poem? One can hardly focus on the interpretation because the lack of pianism is too distracting.

this interpretation is certainly not gavrilovs strongest. he's gotten quite peculiar and idiosyncratic in his age. but in his early ravel recordings he used to set new standards. along with pogorelich's it's my very favorite.

ahahaha but respect for randomly finding my account on metacafe. no respect however for dissing my friend JEFF's random 10/4 unleash. though i admit the piece would sound much better at truzepp speeds of around 1'22

Very impressive... But he doesn't play the text!!! He plays f when he should play p, and so on... Listen to Perlemuter, Rouvier, or Argerich for example. But he's got the strongest technique I have ever seen.

Yes but a great pianist can have a great idea and an amazing tehcnique. When he starts to play ondine he is not playing the notes! So, I can play also the begining as him, if I don't play all the notes either. The point is to do the ppp with all the notes.

Et si c' était lui qui jouait de façon dénaturée? Personnellement, je trouve que son interprétation est étrange... Ce n'est pas du Ravel!
