I actually play piano, and love Bach. I was just yanking chains. Peace out.

'Technicolor trappings of tonality' - this alone sums up my view of this delusional man.

I think Gould was an amazing pianist. I also think it takes a lot of knowledge in music to really see how brilliant it is. I do not think a lot of people on youtube has studied Bachs music.

Speaking of how he loved gray and abhorred bright colors (particularly the primary colors), Gould once said that he comforts himself with the thought that behind every silver lining is a cloud :). I find it mildly ironic that the word "chromatic" comes from the latin "chroma-" (color), yet in this fugue (and many others IMO) the chromaticism takes on a very gray quality.

Yeah, WTC c# minor is a masterpiece of technical achievement in fugue writing, but I think it lacks some of the utterly sublime harmonic qualities that contrapunctus 14 has.
Post-mortem ... ( 3 months ago by diftorhehsmusma)
Post-mortem diagnosis is tricky business, and IMO the recent genius-diagnosis movement among mental health advocates is well-intentioned but misplaced. It only serves to reinforce the us/them self/other mentality that many people have about mental illness, albeit perhaps in a somewhat more positive direction.

So You Want to Write a Fugue is *hilarious* and wonderful. Look for the parallel fifths after the "just ignore the rules and try" lines, and the quodlibet of Bach melodies after "John Sebastian must have been a very personable guy."

The Art of Fugue is one of the many Bach masterpieces. I agree with Gould that Bach's final fuguem the unfinished quadruple fugue, has an eerie sense to it, a "good bye note" feel. ITs a true lost for humanity that this fugue was lost/never finished... the last true musical ideas of a genius during his death... what a legacy.

I came to this site after reading"A Romance on three Legs:Glenn Gould's Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano" (CD318)...I also saw "32 Short films about Glenn Gould"...Glenn was a musical genius whose recordings I treasure...His life however was sad....I cried after finishing the book and the film...but I treasure his recordings. You must be mixing him up with Lang Lang. Gould thought very deeply about music and wrote extensively.

I use this clip as an introduction to AOF for people I am trying to gather to do a string quartet rendition. Gould's discourse is cerebral, and the musical examples are wonderful. What he says about the 14th fugue being an ever-expanding universe put words to a feeling I've always had when I play it. It is divinely inspired music that has provided a lifetime worth of love for me. I've never tired of it. There's always room in this world for yet another interpretation of this work.

Gould's understanding of Bach is so deep and beatiful. I'm really greatful that many of his ideas are recorded for us to listen and learn.

at cheroldt: This "Gould" did tour, was the first northamerican artist on tour in russia after the cold war, you must have been living on an elevator all this years. Bach wrote this music 300 years ago and still rocks on youtube and radio stations, let's see if we can say the same about Van Halen. Bach is the fundament of most of our music, no Bach, no Van Halen.

oh yeah we could go on for centuries discussing and discovering new things on Bach's music. The only thing you can say about Van Halen's music is "duh" .
