On the other hand, I think that it's a shame that the Israeli Government, whose people suffered most from the Nazi time (!), are so harsh against the rest of the Middle East, e.g. eye for an eye policy against Palestinians (let's kill some civilist Palis after a terrorist attack), or Iran (everyone's upset when Iran wants nuclear weapons, but then, why has Israel the right to posess nukes?). I'm sure that McCain will start war on Iran if he becomes president. It's just an unfair world... :S

Are you talking about Germanic languages? I know Icelandic hasn't changed very much in the last centuries, it's still very close to old Norn. But I don't think that the difference between Swedish/Norwegian/Danish and Icelandic was caused by German Hanse influence. I think the Scandinavian languages just have gone their own way, because I'm German, and I understand most of the words when reading a English or Dutch text (West Germanic), but almost no word when reading Scandinavian (North Germanic)

Well I see that you understand English as write it! =)
But I wouldnt agree on that germans don't understand Swedish and I have sevaral examples of Germans finding Swedish extremely easy to read/learn as many words are the same. And the other way around Im able to read Dutch just fine (with some help of my German knowledge though)and if I dont know a
German word "making the Swedish word sound German" is correct in 90% of all cases.
The German ... ( 1 week ago by sillisillisillio)
The German influence was a lot more than just the Hansa actually. If you google it you can see that German has been the outstanding biggest influencer on Swedish throughout the years. Obviously everything isnt spelled the same way but once you have learned how swedish "works" Im sure the similarities are obvious to everyone! ;)
Oh, this works for ... ( 1 week ago by bla287)
Oh, this works for you? Maybe I just haven't got enough fantasy when reading a Swedish text :D. But I see a lot of words which have similarities to English, where the German word is totally different: sjuk - sick - krank f
örst - first - erster våt - wet - nass hel - whole - ganz (heil is used very rarely) hjul - wheel - Rad ..and so on And I noticed that the "Ü" sound is used very often in Swedish.
Wow you found 5 ... ( 1 week ago by sillisillisillio)
Wow you found 5 words! Good job! ...or 4 actually cause krank in swedish means - guess what? Sick!
Funny, there is one Swedish word that comes to my mind right now - besserwisser. No its not a good thing. Especially when you arent even right...

Ah no, I didn't want to be a "besserwisser", I just wanted to say that I find Swedish much more complicated than Dutch, though Swedish sounds much better :D
And by the way, ... ( 6 days ago by bla287)
And by the way, another Swedish word I've seen a few times comes to my mind right now: "fick". That doesn't really mean what I think right now, does it? It seems to be a typical "false friend".
Yes Dutch and ... ( 6 days ago by sillisillisillio)
Yes Dutch and German is a lot closer, I totally agree. But Swedish has tons of similarities with German nevertheless.
People have wondered about my "fickkalender" a few times =) The actual word is ficka and means pocket/Tasche. Or you might be thinking of the verb få (= to get something) which is fick in the past tense. Anna fick en blomma. Anna bekam eine Blume.

By the way...
The German kn
üller-products Kukident and Fittydent are quite funny for Swedes and this whole sentence gets a completely different meaning for us. And I wonder why Vicks is Called Wick in Germany? ;)
Ah, "Vicks" is a ... ( 6 days ago by bla287)
Ah, "Vicks" is a good one, never thought about that ;) But what's the problem with "denta", doesn't it just mean e.g. the hollow in the surface of a car when you slightly hit it (like English "dent" or German "Delle")? Wouldn't you say "knulla" or sth like that :D BTW I finally found a word with three totally different meanings in Swedish/English/German: gammal (old) - to gamble - vergammelt (decayed)

Dont forget when your talking about Germans and genocide lets remember the American genocide 80 million Indians murdered and they were called diggers, bucks, muds and other slang and that has to be the worst genocide in history!!! 500 nations of people down to only a handful now, so many tribes of Indians gone forever! Exterminated.

Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Fuehrer!
Frida's father was an officer in the German SS. Here, Agnaetha, from the Socialist Swedish collaborationist state, wears the colors of Adolf Hitler's National Socialist 3rd Reich --red and black -- representative of blood and soil. Socialist kindred spirits, all. Europa is rot.
