Marie-Claire Alain plays this 1935 Messiaen piece at the Hofkirche in Lucerne. This is a neo-classical tracker organ built 1972-77 by Orgelbau Kuhn AG. The disposition is listed at http://www.hoforgel-luzern.ch/disposition.htm
Rather imposing 32' pedal principals!

This is one of the right tempos for playing this! Shepherds are not in a rush. I heard it last week, sadly torn through like a stampede.
It's so delicate, and we need time to absorb it. If you like this, listen to Messiaen "Le Banquet Celeste." You will not regret that experience!

This is an amazing piece, expertly interpreted. I love the melodic mode , seeming representing the meandering of the shepherds following the star to the birthplace in Bethlehem. The sounds of the shepherds pipe playing as they wander, yet all in an exotic eastern melodic mode.
More, please. Not creeped out AT ALL!
Flat, straight ... ( 7 months ago by Snookyfritz)
Flat, straight pedalboards are the most UNCOMFORTABLE< unnatural pedalboards one can play. Not following the contour of the body's lower movement as one plays up and down the scale is sheer torture to play.
To you, I guess the world is one dimensional flat too, huh? Because it's what Europe has ALWAYS used means we should never change, huh? NOT PROGRESSIVE, intelligent , or ergonomically correct to boot.

I'm not always interested in progressive, intelligent, or economic when art is involved.

perfect playing of a perfect piece. people like to butcher the rhythms of Messiaen but not this artist. ps: some of these comments are atrociously immature. someone called this "gross?" but i do agree with the poster who mentioned the unnaturalness of flat pedal boards. but to each his or her own i suppose.

ah! who is this plebian below? Whilst not being one of the most "tuneful" of composers, Messiaen was a genius of late French romantic organ repertoire. I'd love to see a more intellectual piece than this!

I know what this composer tries to do with awkward clashes, but pieces like this one are just not worth repeating. This bears resemblance to picasso in that a child could replicate it with ease...I honestly don't mean to "bash" this or anything, but I don't see why on earth he would need that huge incredible organ to help him write this...
Awkward clashes ... ( 4 months ago by novaves)
Awkward clashes have nothing to do with the piece, although I respect your description. That a child might recreate something similar does not deny that it is art, rather the opposite; however in this case neither child nor adult would replicate with ease.
