yes but if im not mistaken the abrams has an answer to the ammo problem. Blow out panels
That is still no ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
That is still no guarantee that the crew are safe lol when you consider that the Burlington is over a foot thick, and the armour on the storage bin doors directly behind the crew is a couple of inches thick at best, its no substitute for a low silhouette, which is the only bonus of an autoloader and caracal.
Between panels and ... ( 1 month ago by rocket881)
Between panels and the bustle doors, the entire cache in an M1 could go at once and the turret crew of 3 will most likely live. Injured, yes. Able to escape, maybe. Able to continue the fight, possible. It's been tested and the system has been improved over and over.

Amazing how you ... ( 1 month ago by BruteCommando)
Amazing how you compare a battle proven M1A2 Abrams against a T80-T90 that has no combat worthiness and they are just cheap upgrades from the T72 that got assraped by every western tank out there, Challenger I, Bradley's and especially the Abrams. Autoloader sucks, a well trained loader will let the gunner fire rounds quickly down range. It's been proven in past wars that even if it looks impressive on paper it still has the potential to be a piece of shit.
How is it amazing? ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
How is it amazing? lol The T-72 has never been in direct tank combat with an Abrams or modern NATO MBT, nor is the T-80 a cheap up-grade of the T-72, nor does it have an arse to rape. I don't dine the Abrams is a good MBT and your right that its battle proven, such as proving that its easier for the enemy to hit a big turret compared to that of a small one lol, which was my original comment. That's not a criticism it's a fact lol

You need to get your facts straighten out man and read some books, Republican Guard T72's engaged coalition tank in the first gulf war maybe not a lot of engagements in the second gulf war but they sure as hell fought each other. And in Kosovo the M1A1 fought against T72's once again i know T72's were blown to hell because a friend of mine did the honor of killing some T72's. I agree a bigger silhouette is a easy target but engaging from 1000 yards away it won't matter you're just a small dot.

Having the best Armor, Armament, Crew training, Experience, Electronics and of course Speed all fitted into one tank that will give you a lot of victories on the battlefield. The M1A2 is a vicious bastard why do you think that the Iraqi Republican Guard abandoned their tank compound's instead of engaging the 1st Armor Division in the desert in 2003 ? Instead they let them approach with no problems at all they knew how dangerous the M1A1 was during Desert Storm that's why.
Normally I would ... ( 1 month ago by majormayhem1)
Normally I would agree with you dave, HOWEVER, I'd rather have my Chobam/Du mixed armor and have a human loader than have that russian auto loader junk, I've seen a few auto loaders and they are not pretty and very unreliable so much so, the Russians gunners had to be careful or they would lose a limb. Also the reason the Russians could have such a tank with such a low silhouette is that the average russian peasant isnt but on 5'6", if you are over this height you will a helluva time getting in
The m1 blast doors ... ( 1 month ago by majormayhem1)
The m1 blast doors will withstand the ammunition exploding from a direct hit, it has a release which blows out the top panels and releases much of the energy, these are proven extremely reliable. Having a human loader is great, someone to help maintain the tank, boss around, provide extra insight into a combat situation, can keep up with an auto loader and never breaks, the job is simple, and can be fullfilled by nearly anyone with little training
The reason for a ... ( 1 month ago by majormayhem1)
The reason for a larger turret is also for major electronic upgrades and equipment, comfortability, the average crew members are much better nourished their for much larger and require a bit more room to operate. The Turret issue really all in all isn't that bad especially when it can take the punishment. I wouldnt say its a major draw back, unless we can find a reliable autoloader design and create an interface for a 2 man crew, driver, gunner/commander, their will be a need for a larger turret
Well man, if you ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
Well man, if you bother to go my account you will see the link to my 200+ page military vehicle website, which includes a section on various wars so I am well versed in the history of modern wars. Iraq had UN arms embargos against it since the beginning of the Iran-Iraq war, so was unable to buy modern tanks.
Russia did not sell ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
Russia did not sell T-72's to other countries except for the inferior export version, the T-72M, which was the basic of basic T-72's.
PT1 I think people ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
PT1 I think people seem to be confusing me with someone who is saying the Abrams is a load of shit lol. You know my site & me well enough to know that isnt true. Im fully aware of the problems and benefits of the Abrams turret as well as autoloaders. There was a lot of research after WW2 that showed that hardly any tanks were lost to a hit made below a certain height, hence not only Russian tanks having low silhouettes, but also other NATO tanks such as the Leclerc & STRV 103.
PT2 Though the ... ( 1 month ago by TankNutDave)
PT2 Though the storage system on the M1 is probably very good, its not as safe as not having the ammo stored in a high vulnerable position, which is not to be confused as a criticism of the Abrams, just a logical fact. The Leo2 A4> tries to store ammo below the turret ring, as does the Chall2.

Alright Dave thanks for the small cold war in here but i gotta go crash for tomorrow take care lol.
If the turret is ... ( 1 month ago by rocket881)
If the turret is hit and the ammo goes (which it shouldn't, being IM, but it still can) then the tank can potentially still run and return for BDAR. If ammo in the hull goes, the entire platform is scrap. Tradeoffs either way.
1000yd? M1A2SEP KE ... ( 1 month ago by rocket881)
1000yd? M1A2SEP KE penetrators have proven 98%+ first hit accuracy beyond 5km, while on the move. HEAT rounds are nearly as accurate, and with smarter munitions being developed, that number will climb. The tank is great, but nothing without great ammunition, and all the testing that goes into making it great.
*SIGH* i'm not ... ( 1 month ago by BruteCommando)
*SIGH* i'm not saying 1000yd's is it's maximum range read and understand first i was talking about the silhouette, i said at 1000yd's and farther you will not be seen as a huge target anymore.
No, you said at ... ( 1 month ago by rocket881)
No, you said at 1000yd. "I agree a bigger silhouette is a easy target but engaging from 1000 yards away it won't matter you're just a small dot." No mention of 'and farther.' It is somewhat rare for initial open-field tank-tank confrontation to occur inside of 2000m. Effective range (and just as important, zero range/zero battlespace) is one of the 120mm's greatest advantages.
I did say 1000 ... ( 1 month ago by BruteCommando)
I did say 1000 yards but not in the sense that it's the tanks maximum range or the usual range that they engage each other. I said so to put and example that Silhouette's change when being further away and this time i put 1000 yards as an example. OMG i feel like a english teacher all of a sudden wtf.
So your point was ... ( 1 month ago by rocket881)
So your point was that as things get farther away, they look smaller? Thanks Professor.
