This pleasant version of My Blue Heaven with its interesting "beat" was recorded by Luis Russell and His Orchestra August 8, 1934. Russell was born in Panama in 1902 and after winning the Panamanian lottery at age 18 he moved his family to the US first arriving in New Orleans where he played piano in the many Men's Sporting Establishments of Storyville.
After leading several small bands in the 20s, he formed his own orchestra which became a backup for Louis Armstrong. Armstrong took over the orchestra in 1935 and Luis became musical director for Louis. Russell eventually formed his own orchestra again in 1943 but spent his final years as a chauffeur.
