Want to know what's funny? I did a research project on "Dizzy" when I went through school. I discovered he blew into his horn completely wrong. One isn't suppose to puff one's cheeks when playing that horn. Also, that bent horn? Someone damaged it by accident, but between his cheeks and teh damage, his music sounded "just right". Thus a legend was born.

I thought he bent his horn upwards so that the sound would disturb the people living in his house when he practiced. It would have had to been intentional because there is a brace that is soldered from the lead pipe to the bell just in case the horn is dropped it doesn't bend out of place.

Some say Dizzy's technique (puffed cheeks, etc.) betrayed him on certain transitions as he got older, and that looks to be true, but he held up a long time and in his prime was simply spectacular. He was a great musician.

Dizzy's technique ( ... ( 2 weeks ago by slacka75vt)
Dizzy's technique (he invented it) is called "cycling" He takes air in through his nose, stores it in his cheeks (and lungs) and blows it out his horn. It's a shame that you went to a school that calls this "wrong"
at his birthday ... ( 2 weeks ago by lax18xal)
at his birthday party, someone sat on his horn ad bent it upward... he liked the fact that he could have his head slightley down with his sound still shooting straight out, so he had one custom made with a removable bell
