Cliff just played the rhythm parts in all the Metallica songs. He's really not THAT amazing, people just hail him because his mentality is what Metallica use to stand for. Ellefson's baselines were always more interesting (My last words, bad omen, peace sells (though dave wrote that one), etc).
Although I must say, Cliffs composition skills and his soloing were great, and in live shows he showed that he could do more than just play the rhythm.
