In case you didn't know, Mr. Big had two different guitar players in their roster; first was super-shredder Paul Gilbert (formerly of Racer X). Paul left Mr. big in 1999 and was later on replaced by former Poison axeman, Richie Kotzen. Both guitarists are monster players, but their techniques are very different from each other. Guitar geeks, notice how Richie plays the intro to Mr. Big's classic, GREEN-TINTED SIXTIES MIND. Taken from a Japan TV performance...

Petrucci is in a league of his own. Doesnt mean to say there arent other Great guitarists out there and Mr Big, as a band are AWESOME..A perfect combination in their own right. Rock on Mr Big, AND Dream Theater ;-)

Naah, they broke up back in 2002 or 2003. I know Paul Gilbert still tours and does some Mr. Big songs. Billy Sheehan also probably tourse but I don't think he does any Mr. Big stuff. I don't know about Eric Martin though.

I just can't get into the way Kotzen plays the intro there. Original is best. It's the hammer-ons of Paul Gilbert's that make the lick. This just doesn't sound right for me. I don't see why it would be such en ego-blow for him to just play it how Gilbert did, I mean it's not like Kotzen wrote the song anyway; he should honour the original. Whatever though...

Its not an ego blow. Its an un-written rule of being a musician. If you simply play guitar than you copy what the other guitarist did when he was with the band. If you're a guitar player you make it your own.

Learning to play song exactly as my hero played does not make any less of a "guitar player". I write and perform my own music my way. I play other people's music the way they did, out of respect, because that's the song. That doesn't make me just "someone who plays guitar" as opposed to a guitar player. Anyway, I was just saying I preferred the original. No need to jump down my throat, I'm entitled to an opinion.

But there isn't anything bad that can be said about Kotzen. He is absolutely phenomenal. I do prefer his own material, but its amazing how well he jumped into this position, especially after following the exceptional playing of Gilbert. He plays eerily close to Gilbert's style in my opinion, and that is sheer talent, especially after hearing his true sound in his blues based albums. He is an absolute incredible musician. Great vocalist as well.

This isn't to say anything bad about anyone's comments here, but it burns my ass when people say "former POISON guitarist, Richie Kotzen". RK and PG are great players, but RK is so much more than his other projects (i.e. - Mr. Big, Poison, etc.) Check out the Acoustic Cuts tracks on Itunes......for the love of GOD, the guy can do no wrong !!
