Yeah, it's a killswitch. It's a technique that's been used for a while, notably by guys like Tom Morello. Either by using a muted pedal or channel via stomp box or by using the pickup switch and alternating between live and turned down pickups. Buckethead uses the technique often and has an actual button on some of his guitars to kill the feed from his guitar to achieve certain effects.

ehem...a killswitch cuts all signal traveling from the guitar to the amplifier. A pickup switch does just that, switches between two, or more pickups. Trust somebody who owns a killswitch for his guitar; me, dumbfuck
