The population spike seen on the graph here was caused by the discovery of hydrocarbon energy; Coal, Oil and Natural Gas.
There are, on a global average, ten calories of hydrocarbon energy invested in every calorie of food energy we consume. From commercial fertilisers to transportation to refrigeration we have simply turned hydrocarbon energy into food - that's the population spike, nothing else.
It is a once only
gift from nature and it has been one hell of a party, a bit rough at times but we are animals at the end of the day.
The energy source is finite and looks like it has reached its peak. When it starts to decline it will do so as steeply as it increased. The population will follow it.
Make the most
of it. When you drive, fly, turn on a TV or an electric light or cook your Sunday dinner marvel at the sheer luxury of it all.
The Post-Oil Age will be very different.
