Even in a larger vehicle at 70 mph, the human body can't absorb this much energy. The seatbelt and air bag will stop you, but your organs (your heart) will continue to move, and this will cause what is known as a aortic tear. You bleed to death in seconds internally. In most collisions, people see them comming and can brake enough to get down to a lower speed before impact. These test are done at an average speed. (Not of driving, but when most collisions occur.)I'd like to see the dummies legs.

Yes it is a branch of mercedes. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep divorced Mercedes after they developed horrible transmissions for Chrysler vehicles.

I'm looking to buy ...( 5 months ago by clerlic)
I'm looking to buy a smart car, mostly for the size, looks and fuel efficiency. Since I'm young, and not planning on getting kids in a long time, I won't need a larger car. I do wonder about how fun it is to drive a car like this since I've only driven mostly large family cars and full-size sedans.

I know the smart cars are very strong on a frontal car crash and rear crash but what about getting hit on the side by a truck? That door is the persons only safety, and it is so thin. Also, the door reaches the whole side of the car and if s truck hits the side, that car door would smash the person flat.

It's fun enough, its pretty much a kart for its handling, not too powerfull naturally but still not too bad on performances.
Also the cabrio is a pleasure :)

i saw on the news this morning that the smart car failed the frontal crash test

It wasn't a tuned Smart, it had a whole other engine that came from a Suzuki hayabusa. I think its a 1100cc engine and it makes a smart car do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Look up Smart Diablo.

not even a suburban will fare well against a truck, the fact is the smart car is pretty much indestructible. what you have to worry about is hitting ridged stationary objects, because the crumple zone is like 6 inches. it is supposed to activate the crumple zones on other cars, but trees don't really have those.

Get a honda fit, better fuel economy, twice the interior space, and you don't look like a girl driving it
Yes the impact a ...( 4 months ago by photographyplusinfo)
Yes the impact a body can obsorb is only so much. That is why many people believe bigger is safer, BUT, with newer cars(i wont say older ones) they have better frames and are better engineered to absorb the impact before it gets to you. Old cars people would say "i got rear ended and it didnt even dent the back of my car!" and think thats a good thing. They fail to mention the whiplash and neck problems they had the rest of their life. Cars are now made to die FOR people not instead of people.

the legs of the dummy were crushed that's why it isnt shown. In US tests the car only got 3 stars for frontal crash.
The test is rigged. ...( 3 months ago by light4darkness)
The test is rigged. The large Benz has a generous "crumple zone" that absorbs the impact. What if TWO SMARTs crash, and none has an crumple zone?
Or what if it crashes agains a pole, or an older car/truck with no crumple zone?
It's much better than a motorcycle in most situations, except in the few cases where you could go around and avoid the crash altogether.
the smart car is ...( 2 months ago by Shaggy1884)
the smart car is actualy very good in crashes its bulit around a cage its designed so that in a crash the energy is distrabuted around the cage so all the plastic etc flies off this the energy of the crash is not affected the key drivers compartment and every one lives check the 5th gear crash test of the smart car you can see it at crash at 70 mph and do better then most other cars

i would really like to see a head on collusion with a smart car and a suburban
