I haven't been in Tibet, but I have had a lot of contact with Tibetan people outside of Tibet. Those are the Tibetans who left Tibet because they didn't want to live as second class in their own country and with policies that didn't respect their culture and traditions.

I'm not focusing on the negative but rather on the positive. The positive would be for China to recognize reality--that the Dalai Lama has huge support all around the world, and that when they slander the Dalai Lama they make themselves look absolutely awful. Its the worst sort of behavior slandering a very great historical figure.

But there was slavery in China too as you well know if you are familiar with Chinese history. Slavery of various kinds was common all over the planet and still is in new forms. China's problem is in not admiting its own evil in its history like the terrible brutality of the landlords that the PRC fought against. Now PRC is reinstating oppression against workers in a new form. We do admit our evil past or at least the best of the western intelligentsia does.

The western media continues focus to focus on all the negative things about china and even exaggerating about what is happening to Tibet because of their fear that China will become the next superpower. It's only common sense to rely on multiple, independent sources for news. That is not "brainwashing", that is a reasonable means for staying informed.
I encourage Hu Jintao to open a dialogue with the Dalai Lama. Israel was willing to talk to Arafat, many of our presidential candidates are willing to reach out to the people Bush has made our enemies, I encourage China to do the same with Tibet.
There is nothing to fear from addressing Tibetan concerns; it will only make China stronger.
