Using infrared tracking and projection, we can simulate displays on flexible and foldable surfaces. This allows us to fit a large interactive display into our pockets.
The tracking is accomplished using the Wii Remote and IR LEDs Johnny Lee - Carnegie Mellon University

These are just ... ( 4 weeks ago by radsimu)
These are just objects on which images are being projected from somewhere. This is an entire system which includes a projector controlled by a deforming algorithm based on the position of the object to be projected on. There are more ways to determine this but in any case this needs additional hardware. This entire system is a great idea but can't be compared to mobile devices because I don't find it very mobile... This needs a great deal of setup for a particular location.

Great job man, I watched your videos almost immediately after your debut on TED. Multi-touch, head tracking and such are concepts that are just waiting to be explored and integrated into society. This new folding display with directional functionality along with your other works will surely effect the way we think about interfaces in the future. Keep it up!

Projectors don't have to be big, it probably won't be long before you can get projectors the size of maglite torches, and they could be attached to glasses or a hat or built into a phone or possibly even a wristwatch. also they won't waste this technology on making newspapers, try laptops (which won't need to be put on your lap anymore since they would fold up to a tiny size and go in your pocket) you would get all the advantages of a wide screen monitor and the portability of a PDA.

I believe the idea behind this video is that the projection is used to simulate how these conceptual displays could be used, rather than proposing the idea of carrying around a miniature projector to use these gadgets.

Thats kinda true.. they'd use his idea's and then get Slim SMD's (Surface mounted infrared Leds) and put them in places like newspapers etc and then send rockets to search anyplace where theres a strong infrared emitting light then booom. I doubt what i said will happen but who knows how bad the military are?

hmm im sure someone would make a machine where you stand infront of and you put in some money into it to get a special newspaper (with irda's inside them) and then a little more cash for the projector to display the latest news.. come back later put in more money using ur special newspaper for more latest news..

If you can add a virtual image on the paper you can also add a virtual video. Try making a news paper with moving images. Like in Harry Potter. That would been awesome.
