"A compilation of no-look passes, behind-the-back moves, and circus shots. A reminder of what made him so mind blowing in the first place." SPORTS ILLUSTRATED (March 2007) on this highlight mix.
http://www.MaravichBook.com "The definitive biography of Pistol Pete Maravich" ESPN The "essential" Maravich biography. The New York Times The mix brought to you by the new book MARAVICH and the Pete Maravich Memorial Basketball Camp. Pete averaged 44.2 points per game. That remains an all-t
ime NCAA record. But it was HOW he played that burnished his legacy. Welcome to the show. Special thanks to Wayne Federman and LSU Basketball.

The term "Showtime" was coined by Chick Hearn.

HI Chriso I was recording the words of Henry Bippy who played with and against Pete. Pete fit in very well with a team concept when near the end of his career he played with the Celtics and helped them to win the Eastern conference against the Sixers-as stated by Boston Globe writer Bob Ryan when listing the 5 reasons the Celtics won the conference Bibby said of Pete during the interview:" I'm talking about Pete and I'm getting chills because I know how good he was." Showtime was coined at LSU.
The difference ... ( 1 month ago by 514stop)
The difference between Pete's entrance to the NBA and Magic's should not be underestimated an article by a reporter who covered the Hawks demonstrates the difference. I'll print it when I get to my own computer. By the way, Magic said to Pete's sons at the NBA 50 greatest "Your dad was the original showtime" Bill Walton has said that in regards to creativity no one was even close to Pete. Pat Reilly said of Pete after coaching Magic to two He was the best ball handler I ever saw. Ever."
By the way in the ... ( 1 month ago by 514stop)
By the way in the book Maravich Chick Hearn said that Pete was one of the 4 or 5 players that he would pay to see. Bob Lanier recently said in an article I read that " To this day Pete was the only player he would pay to see."
Here is the excerpt ... ( 1 month ago by 514stop)
Here is the excerpt from J Huber who covered the Hawks during Pete's years there "Pete Mavavich artistry, talent demons": I watched the divide between Pete and his Hawks teammates grow frighteningly wide heard the bitter sniping first-hand. He had been thrown to a veteran band of wolves and not one of them had much mercy The enormous contract set the tone immediately, and the erratic style cemented it. He was hired to put asses in the seats and, to do that the amazing Showtime was necessary.

Part 2: I heard them, every night, from one corner of the old locker room to the other, bitching. Me, with my notebook, them with their very upfront anger. The animosity was staggering and very real, almost to the point of violence. That it never reached that was a tribute to the old coach Richie Guerin as anything. He didn't like Maravich any more than his older players did, but he knew the situation, understood the artistry and talent, and knew he had to somehow make it work. It never did.

stockton plays nothing like pistol pete...stockton is the bill bradley of pt.guards...pistol pete was the foundation for creative games like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan...and further to players like Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, T-Mac (notice the right leg extension during the jump shot)... closest thing to stockton, and i hate to say it...deron williams.

in terms of his grace is what i was trying to get at, and please dont compare t-mac and AI to pistol you know thats stretching it.

um, i categorically disagree. T-mac and AI, behind the back passes, the fake behind the back pass to a lay-up (check out jerry stackhouse, AI, Ray Allen, they did it long before Jason Williams, but Pete was the first to do it), the no-look passes, the innovation and creativity of throwing a basketball off the glass to dunk...t-mac knows his flap-jacks. the only thing similar to john stockton and pistol is that they're white.
