Ella was not a singer. She was a master musician, and her voice was a one-of-a-kind musical instrument. ONE of the MANY things she could do with that instrument was sing.

Not even a little bit. A musician, yes, but my voice is definitely NOT an instrument. Or at least I've never figured out how to play it...

Yeah, but my off-the-wall point was that she didn't simply sing. She "played" her voice, as a musician would play an incredible instrument.

very true, I am a singer myself and I haven't ever heard anyone with that kind of vocal control.

Monica Mancini is fabulous! And way, way too humble! To be honest, as a composer and music historian--I think she's better all-around than Ella Fitzgerald, even though Ella was great...I'm sorry that Ella made some of her later recordings (eg. the Jobim tribute toward the end of her life...)in which the intonation and "scatting" was dreadful...Thanks Monica for your tribute

If they did the Jobim Songbook during her stay at Verve in the 60's that would have been cool, but by 1965/1966 Ella's last album with Verve was Whisper Not, after which she joined Capital, then Reprise before going to Norman's label Pablo in 1972, maybe that's why the Jobim songbook came so late
Interesting. ... ( 10 months ago by 800pieds)
Interesting. Although I love most of what she did, bossa nova was the only genre in which I did not enjoy Ella. I think the feel of her swing is not always in sync with the brazilian rythms. I'm thinking about "So danco samba". It doesn't feel right. Other than that she's still the best.
