In this Swing Time clip, Lucky, Astaire, saves Penny's, Rogers, job by showing how much she has taught him.
The first true dance number with the two, the other being with Fred fumbling and pretending to be a terrible dancer. Both scenes, however, go to the same song, Pick Yourself Up, this scene without lyrics and much more lively with the other more calm, with lyrics, between the two. Music by Jerom

Personally, I get a little tired of this debate about who watches whom in Fred and Ginger's dances and which of the two was the better dancer. It doesn't matter, what matters is how they complimented one another so perfectly. Katherine Hepburn said it best, "Fred gives her class, Ginger gives him sex".
They were always the perfect sandwich and their dancing was like two different but equally delicious fillings, one classic and controlled, the other beautiful and perky.

The quote was from a Frank and Ernest comic strip. It was one of her favorite comics. They even reproduced it in her biography! That said, I always watch Fred, he was the best dancer ever lived. NO doubt. Ginger was beautiful and the perfect complement to him. They were perfect together! He always felt that Barrie Chase in his TV specials was his best dance partner and he also loved dancing with Cyd Charisse.
Still, my favorite movies are the the Fred and Ginger ones! Pure magic!

Noooo.... You're MISQUOTING a famous quote....and yes, i love it too!!! they are both AMAZING---but if you're gonna make a point of it, do some research first.... The comment about ginger "doing what fred did, but backwards and in heels" was originally used in a comic strip, as a flippant comment 4fx sake! Pple just keep regurgitating it as if it actually means something... Can't we all just agree that they were both brilliant?????!!!

The duo Fred and Ginger was just perfect.
Personnaly I never fancied Eleanor Powell or Cyd Chariss. Maybe Cyd was a better dancer but the magic is not only technical. There's a little something more which could be found with Ginger.
Anyway, we are not on our way to watch such qperfection these days....

Does anyone else know that they used to sew lead weights into the hem of Ginger's skirts so they'd fan out whenever she spun around?

You are right sagendare and it was Ginger's idea, she designed all of her own outfits for the films. They used to stich a very thin, rounded but levered section of lead the whole way round the hem. This way it was flexible in way those wavy toy snakes you buy kids are. Otherwise her skirts would have looked weird and the hem would have curled upwards. They also had to do this as the censors would not have tolerated a glimpse of Ginger's underwear mid swirl!
