Come on, this movie is all about music. I guess the whole gangster thing was kinda gayish even then (snappin' gangsta! LOL). But hey, it's Bernstein back there and a whole orchestra making some loud noise. And therefore, it's BRILLIANT!!

I've never seen so many dumb comments before. Some people can't distinguish art from reality clearly. THIS IS ART! There's a story about how three guys went after a ballet dancer because they thought him weak and gay. They followed him from the theatre and tried to beat him up. He threw each one ot them through a shop window and put all in hospital because he was so strong. Try lifting a woman above your head with one hand! That's reality!

...that's a true story. As for West Side Story, its one of the most significant musicals/ballets to have ever hit the screen. The story is of course as all you numb heads know is Romeo and Juliet. Montagus and Capulets, Jets and Sharks, geddit!? The score by Leonard Bernstein is unique and operatic. Its complex and ground breaking. As American art it is unsurpassable. I feel sorry for any goon who can't distinguish this as art from reality which is base and cruel where as this is beauty!
