you should understand that father ted does not attack catholicism as a whole but the warped catholicism of ireland that the catholic church in ireland has permeated. Magdalen laundries, corruption, complete control over everyday life. In order to truely understand this I think you need to understand its contextual signifigance...i.e living in ireland

well actually there is a point to be made to that. The father ted script was originally offered by the writers to RTE but they wouldn't take it. Not for fear of offending the church but because rte didnt do much in house comedy production and because dermot morgan had a very difficult relationship with rte execs

You're wrong there. The common misconception is that the producers offered it to RTE. They didn't. They went straight to Ch4 who bought it and then RTE also bought the rights to it.
It was not offered to RTE first.
