The European cuckoo lays its eggs in other birds nests, for them to hatch and raise. A neat trick. So, it's a pretty bird, but "devious" in some respects, and leaves parenting to strangers. You can find aspects of this in popular culture, like Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hatches a Egg".And so, "cuckold" a husband whose wife has an affair with another man--leading to the birth of a child she passes off as the husband's. The husband has been "coo-cooed" or "cukolded" in the more proper term, I think.

The "Coo Coo" was on the original record label, done for Frank Walker of Columbia records ca. 1930.

"Im always amazed by the wide range of music they had back in the 1920's" It was the first decade that poor Americans had lots of record players. So the record companies, who were ignorant because their past experience was with serving rich Americans, tried recording just about anything non-ritzy and put it out to see if that sold. Which is wonderful for us because even if a genre didn't in fact sell, those rare records can still be found and preserved.

Clarence "Tom" ...( 3 months ago by rblaustein)
Clarence "Tom" Ashley from Johnson Co TN recorded "The Cuckoo Bird" for Columbia Records in 1929. In 1952 it was reissued on the Folkways Anthology of American Folk Music.
In 1960, folk music researcher Ralph Rinzler met Ashley at the Union Grove NC old time fiddlers contest and convinced him to play at folk festivals and concerts in the North. One of his back-up musicians was Doc Watson, who became a star in his own right.

To bad Gwen Foster wasn't still around when Clarence was "Rediscovered" in the 1960s. Clarence was forgotten for more than 30 years, they manage to find him, they asked him to play Coocoo, he refused, because it had to be perfect. He worked on it for a long time until he had it down perfect again. I'm glad somebody got it on video, definitely a great moment in AMerican music.
