Amy, the best thing is to just ignore this jerk. He is obviously sick, with no clue to what your mother meant to thousands of GI's and folks at home as well in the dark days of WWII.

Jo Stafford was a beautiful lady with a gorgeous voice of perfect pitch. May God be with her family in their loss. We have lost a voice that will never be replaced.

is there anybody here that knows how to get YouTube to block the comments posted here by this sick individual? This is total internet abuse. As a YouTube customer, I don't feel I shouldn't be subjected to reading posts that are beyond "opinion" and meant to hurt a family who have just lost their mother...and someone who belongs in the pantheon of American music. Is there anyone out thee who knows how to go about reporting this individual to YouTube?

I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING JO IN BOSTON IN THE EARLY 50s. NO ONE CAN TOP HER. I FIRST HEARD HER WHILE CONVALECING IN AN ARMY HOSPITAL ON STATEN ISLAND IN 1944. SHE SANG 'LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY' FROM 'COVER GIRL' MAY HER FAMILY REST ASSURED THAT THEY WILL BE UNITED ONCE AGAIN IN CHRISTS PRESENCE.
SHE OUT DID HERSELF IN 'KISS OF FIRE' YES! those were the days, when people had values and 'truth' was present. rest in peace jo, we love you.

How did you come to develop an obsession with Jo Stafford of all people? (She did not exactly keep a high profile for the past, say, 40 years.)
Is this something that you've had for years--or decades--or is it something recent?

I remember watching Jo's TV show as a kid. I loved her singing and her class. From her, I learned to love the singers of her generation (my parents' generation.) She was great!

A lot of people screw up the meaning of "perfect pitch", wrongly taking it to mean the ability to sing on key. So if I may, for those who don't understand the term, "perfect pitch" is the ability to either identify the frequency or musical name of a specific tone, or reproduce a frequency, frequency level, or musical pitch without comparing the tone with any objective reference tone. I.E., if someone says, give me an "E", she can sing it perfectly without needing the piano as a guide!

It's quite ok irisMG, I already knew that. Just thought I'd mention it in case you felt I was screwing something up. With a vast collection of Jo's numbers, including most of hers and the Pied Pipers'78's I feel I have a grasp of the correct usage of the term. Perhaps correspondence not actually dealing with Jo's passing and the fond memories we fans have, belong in another context.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that you weren't using the word right - I just wanted to head off the inevitable people who would see your comment and say, "yeah right, obviously she can carry a tune well", when that's not what's meant by "perfect pitch" at all. It's just one of those "show-off"-y terms that gets misunderstood by those who don't know a lot about music.

Wecaan--
You're just being silly.
Billie Holiday had a movie made about her; She's had all of her recordings released on CD in deluxe box sets by major labels like Columbia and Verve, and her music continues to be played to this day.

Yeah, it's Billie Holiday! She's a step above the rest. She's definitely not appreciated enough. So you want people to stop listen to her, or studios to stop releasing her stuff? It's not like she's selling like hot cake. Other far less deserving artists get the same deal, and even more attention.
I don't get why you're hating on Billie Holiday, one of the most fantastic, and sadly also one of the most under appreciated artists ever. She died nearly penniless. She didn't see fame in her life.

I absolutely loved her. Sorry she passed away in July. I grew up with Jo Stafford's hits, her voice as familiar to me as my own mother's. I wrote her a long fan letter in 1998 and received a lovely card and autographed photo from her in less than a week. (Margaret Whiting had given me her address.) She'll be greatly missed.

Like Sinatra, Jo Stafford performed with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. It's obvious both singers were influenced by Dorsey's smooth continued legato phrases played on his trombone. Just listen to Stafford's breath control on Autumn Leaves. Thanks for posting.
