The original version was by Bonnie Guitar. Both Bonnie's and Gale's versions were hits at the same time, with Gale slightly edging out Bonnie's version as the bigger hit. The song, written by Ned Miller, wasn't recorded by Pat Boone, but was recorded by Elvis Presley (although his was not released as a single).

When I first heard "Dark Moon" I was amazed when I found it was Gale Storm singing. Her voice was perfect for this song and the other songs she recorded in the Fifties. She was a very talented lady.
