Depends on your definition of "better." Wingsuits allow something like 3 meters of horizontal motion for every meter of vertical movement. Therefore, you are flying more then falling. It's pretty awesome.

I know that glide performance in the best wing suit is above 3:1. My question is at what rate of descent is that number achieved? What are the forward speeds? What is the minimum descent speed achievable trading speed for a flat glide? With these questions I'm really leading to this final question: Has anybody attempted a wing-suit landing in/on the water without deploying their chute?

I know jeb corliss and lugigi cani tried to land a wingsuit, and someone say they did. you can google "jeb corliss luigi cani" and go on the first link, but the site is not very updated. i think the movie is from 2005 or something, and I dont know what they really have achieved.

Mrsavage - thanks for the info. I went to the site...it was, as you stated...2 years old. I wonder if Jeb Corliss has attempted the feat, and what condition he is now in? I can find nothing more recent anywhere on the net.

This video integrates best a music track with the visual effect, capturing the rebel-freedom from restrictions of more-cumbersome flight devices. I hope some day wingsuits become a little more bird-like, that humans can build lightweight extensions (functioning like feathers) protracted by muscular control, to enable slower flights and possible bird-like landings without the parachute. Maybe a glide-ratio of five- or six-to-one may be possible. The current 3/1 is still pretty steep and fast.
