yup, about 7.8 km/s for LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and about 10.8 km/s to go to the Moon. Which is quite close to the escape velocity (11.2 km/s iirc) which is needed to leave the Earth's neighborhood. The one thing that I thought may have been exaggerated would be the sudden explosive acceleration when the second engine fires up, but what do I know. Any thoughts?

Actually I was ... ( 2 weeks ago by da40flyer)
Actually I was watching "When We Left Earth" on Discovery Channel and I think it was Al Bean from Apollo 12 who said this, i'll have to go back and check on the DVR, but he did describe it as they felt like they were going to be thrown into the instrument panel, so the jolt at first stage separation may not be too exaggerated.
The only other ... ( 2 weeks ago by da40flyer)
The only other problem with this scene, as spectacular as it is, is at 1:10 when the gantry swing arms are retracting, they did not retract one at a time. They all retracted simultaneously. Although, it made for a REALLY cool shot with the camera going down the side of the Saturn V.

haha, astronauts don't have much time to watch youtbe videos and there's only a couple hundred of them in the world. I've had the chance to meet several astronauts, but none from the Apollo program yet.

My kids and I met Buzz Aldrin at the Discovery Science Center here in So Calif about a year and a half ago. Of course that was more of a thrill for ME than for the kids. :)
What the Hell does ... ( 2 weeks ago by fyafighta1313)
What the Hell does Fred Haise say when they cut the engines in Orbit? I know its some sort of astronaut lingo but I have never figured it out (sinko...?) is that what he says..I love space flight espescially the apollo missions, If anyone can help me out with that I would apreciate that. Thanks
The Saturn 5 is ... ( 2 weeks ago by patsfreak)
The Saturn 5 is still the most powerful rocket ever built. God that thing was huge.

I actually looked at the script online, Fred Haise says SECO (sustainer engine cutoff) Aparantley it is very bad luck if the co-pilot does not say this before the engine cutoff (worked well for them huh?)

363 feet of it that was built to explore the moon. Doesn't (SECO) mean, single engine cut-off as its now running on single engine?
This is my favorite ... ( 1 week ago by L1GHTYR1)
This is my favorite movie. This scene and the reentry scene are the most gripping in the film. I watched the Discovery Channel series "When We Left Earth" and "In the Shadow of the Moon" and I am completely amazed at what we can do. This was back in a time when we loved our President and we also shared in his vision and dared to challenge the unknown. Going to the moon and returning home safely was mankind's greatest achievement.

This is one of my fav movies and thanks to Dr. Wernher Von Braun a ex member of the Nazi party who built the rocket that got us to the moon and President Kennedy.

Only in take off thrust. Saturn V wins in height, weight, and payload. The Energia was only used for shuttle launches anyway.

Actually, the ... ( 5 days ago by A86)
Actually, the Russian N-1 moon rocket is the most powerful rocket ever built in human history. The Saturn V had a maximum first-stage thrust of 7.6 million pounds whereas the N-1 had a maximum first-state thrust of 10.2 million pounds. The N-1 was never able to work properly however and never made it into space. It always blew up before second stage separation due to poor management in its building design and process. The
Soviets deemed it unsafe and gave up their program to go to the Moon.

... ( 3 days ago by ct92404)
IntermittentSprocket...I looked up the acronym and it could either mean "Single Engine Cut Off," "Sustainer Engine Cut Off" or maybe "Stage Engine Cut Off." But at SECO (or MECO with the Space Shuttle), the engines are shut down and the ship coasts, because timing is critical. The engine gives a boost so that you reach a certain velocity at a certain time, but then you coast with no thrust. The key is to eject from Earth orbit at just the right time and speed to transfer orbit to the Moon.
Kranz's memoir said ... ( 2 days ago by cunfuzzed)
Kranz's memoir said that SECO stood specifically for "Single Engine Cut Off."
