Summer of 1986 my old friend and then student Luis Pelayo and I ventured to the home of horror icon Forrest J Ackerman to shoot some footage to go with the appearance of 4SJ on Air Talk, a long running Pasadena City College radio program that we had recently developed as a live cable TV program.
The program was entirely student produced under the auspices of a class taught by myself and Sharon Stephens. I had known Ackerman years before and it was great working with him again, and I think my students got a kick out of it too. Sadly much of the Acker-collection has been sold off over the
years, but Forrest is still alive and kicking, even if in a somewhat smaller home today. Here are some surviving clips of the interview and the "tour" of his home cum museum.

I owe a good chunk of my childhood to Forrest Ackerman. I was one of those LUCKY kids in the late 60's/early 70's who stumbled on Famous Monsters of Filmland. To this day, if I see a cover of a particular issue of that magazine, I can remember exactly what grade I was in, what I did that summer, etc....as good as a photo album! :)

I agree with the first poster. Forry, through these magazines, was a huge influence on my life as a formative adult. To see a cover evokes a set of associations that little else can.

YES! Mom and I were at the drugstore that fateful year and FM #4 was on the BOTTOM shelf, within easy reach. I begged and cajoled and made all manner of foolish promises of indentured servitude, filial love etc. until she parted with - thirty five cents! Tana Leaf Tea never tasted so good!

I am pretty sure that this is the same " Haunted Studios " that I bought that great life mask set of Karloff,Lugosi & Price from on e-bay recently ? ..So..this super video comes as no surprise to me. I see that I am a year older than Ken P & I too recall that fatefull day in 1960 when I plunked down my 35 cents to buy my first FM at the local candy store ---I won't even dignify Ray ( you know who you are ) by referring to his full name but millions of us monster kids will always love 4E !
