Colonel Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (Russian:
Юрий Алексеевич Гагарин, Jurij Alekseevič Gagarin; March 9, 1934 -- March 27, 1968), was a Soviet cosmonaut who in 1961 became the first human in space and the first human to orbit the Earth.

Well, that is not exactly true. There were German engineers and scientists our space program. Not as many as in US program, though. Still, the mastermind behind all the success was Korolev.

My understanding is that the Russians back-burnered their German rocket scientists, limiting their involvement... tapping them as a resource. The US got the prize,Werner Von Braun, and they let him loose on the program. There was no stopping him. Sadly, R H Goddard was reclusive and protective of his knowledge and had none of the skills to run a truly massive program the way Von Braun did. Korolev and Von Braun were cut from the same fabric. They were Titans!

It would be nice if you put Elton John's rocket man as the theme tune for this video as it was obviously written as a mark of respect to Gagarin.Gagarin inspired a generation and beyond will inspire further. Well done Yuri where ever you are.

How an earth the first man on the moon can be remembered of the top of any ones head yet ask any one of Yuri Gagarin and they would probably scratch their heads. First man in space is 10x the achievement of a man landing on piece of rock orbiting our planet.

The second one is Gherman Titov, who flew the second Vostok four months later. The Soviets really believed in redundancy; Titov was not just the backup but a true alternate. If Gagarin had a last-minute medical problem or something, Titov would be all suited up and ready to step in, and the flight would go on without delay - and it would be Titov's name everyone would remember, not Gagarin's.
