but there is no such thing as turbo lag with a supercharger right? and technically turbos are superchargers "turbosuperchargers" i thought when you said superchargers you meant every single forced induction system was unreliable.

well technically they're not called "turbosuperchargers" its just "turbocharger". and i didnt say either of them were unreliable, i said superchargers are innefficient in that the power gained is less than would be with a turbocharger. given both drive methods, exhaust spinning a turbine wheel versus the supercharger putting a parasitic draw on your crankshaft,turbos are basically free energy.

Technically speaking, a turbo IS a turbosupercharger. They're both suited to different applications, and most people will admit that supercharged engines are more predictable and hence usually are more fun to drive, rather than turbo lag (albeit slight nowadays) kicking in during a turn and sending you into a spin.

agreed. although i wasnt talking about the driveability of either. what i said was superchargers are an innefficient way to add HP. the ratio of power taken vs. power gained is much better with a turbocharger. not to mention, if you want to up the HP, all you need to do is up the boost via boost controller vs. removing your S/C belt changing out the pulley, reinstalling the smaller pulley and then tuning your ECU to the new boost level.

As the man once said, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." The exhaust gas which drives the turbocharger increases the pressure inside the exhaust manifold, meaning the engine has to work that much harder to pump the air through the turbocharger and out the exhaust.

agreed. i said exactly that in a previous post. but the back-pressure caused by the turbo saps less energy than a supercharger drawing directly off the crankshaft, which as you will agree, is directly drawing from your pool of horsepower. again, i didnt say superchargers are all bad. i said given the platform (audi), a supercharger is an inefficient power adder, whereas a twin turbo system which is what came stock on the S4 until 2002, is a more efficient and more expandable option.

Superchargers sound better in my opinion and are overall a more refined and tractable way to increase engine power. Yes a turbo will give you more, and yes a turbo car could probably beat a supercharged one, i like the sound, and in real life racing (not dragracing) a supercharged linear and predictable engine output makes a big difference. Also, ever heard of a supercharger belt clutch?

first, thanks for proving my point that superchargers are less efficient and less expandable. as far as them being more tractable,i've already stated as fact, that the steps needed to up the boost on a S/C system are many and not for the faint of heart. whereas with the twist of a knob or push of a button a turbo's boost level can be increased. and as far as a supercharger belt clutch, they are rarely used and do not make the system more efficient. remember efficiency = power gained / power used

i agree with the part that turbos are better especially when you consider that there are now many systems which can practically eliminate turbo lag like twin charging, but of course this complicates the engine. However, i just like to say again it is turbosupercharger!! it was first sold to the public under that nomenclature they just shortened it to make it more distinguishable.
