Jesus. All you have ...( 4 months ago by scooterdooter)
Jesus. All you have to do is say the words "belt out a song" and Ethel Merman appears. It's like a conjuring spell or something.
I once said those very words in a car park in Jersey in 1992. Merman's ghost showed up and sang "Ding Ding Ding Went The Trolley" so loudly it rattled my teeth. True story!

What a performance! By the way, as you and that other person are discussing, I liked shy Barbra Streisand a lot better than the new, arrogant Barbra. She's still talented, but she should definitely tone it down some.

Shy? No, I think Barbra really thought she was better than anyone else, by which I mean to say, she couldn't stand to think anyone was better than her, so she clammed up.

If this was before Funny Girl, Streisand was only 19 or 20. I'd say she was shy... and kind of a bitch.

Merman didn't "drown out" Judy - it was Garland's stock in trade to give her guests centre stage..she was extremely generous like that.
I disagree. Barbra ...( 2 months ago by hollywearsprada)
I disagree. Barbra had only been singing 2 years at this point, she hadn't even done Funny Girl. If you were talking about present day Barbra, I might say you had a point. But not this Barbra. To say she thinks she's better than Merman and Garland is crazy. I think she felt comfortable with Judy, as you can see in all the other videos. But when Merman joins she changed. She becomes very nervous at the questions, doesn't know the song and is completely overpowered by Ethel's loud personality.
I think she has ...( 2 months ago by gabsylv)
I think she has always been extremely self-absorbed and finds communication outside of 'song' (where she is master) to be a challenge. Typical introverted tendencies. Perhaps she did not think herself *better* than E or J, but simply could not tolerate sharing the limelight. She's always been a SOLO artist, after all...

Ethel didn't make a suprise appearence on the show. The producer, Ethel, & Judy talked it over and they wanted to suprise Barbra. I don't think that seat in the 2nd row was empty becuase no one showed up for it. Just a little fun fact if anyone thinks Ethel just walked on stage and stole Barbra's moment.

It's a pretty well know fact that Barbra was a huge fan of Judy and it's also been said that Judy was a huge fan of Barbra. It's also known that Ethel was brash and always wanted to be the center of attention. Barbra is the consumate professional. She wasn't going to try and compete.
