THE COMPLETE VERBATIM SOUNDTRACK OF THE HEARING: On March 23, 1954, at the height of the Cold War, with the US fighting China in Korea, and the Rosenbergs facing electrocution, Senator Joseph McCarthy, Republican of Wisconsin, investigated William Mandel, author of several scholarly books about the USSR which were in State Department Information Service Libraries. Mandel's unprecedent critical responses to McCarthy's interrogation were seen on nationwide television by an estimated 40 million viewers.

In November 1954 the United States Senate censured Republican Joseph McCarthy for conduct unbecoming to a senator. The vote was 67 to 22, with all the Democrats and about half the Republicans voting against him. He was condemned on two counts: 1. Contempt and abuse of a Senate committee that looked into his financial affairs in 1952 2. Insulting members of this committee on national television thereby bringing the Senate "into dishonour and disrepute" and obstructing the constitutional process.

Answering any question concerning your political affiliation or belief removed the right to refuse to answer similar questions about others, even people you may only have seen at a meeting. Also, under the law at the time, someone who was an officer in a chapter of the US Communist Party, and also knowledgeable of Communist theory, could be jailed for "Conspiring to advocate the violent overthrow of the US Government at some future time." Ownership of books such as "Das Kapital" was evidence.

this went on until the mid-70's. My father was afraid to leave his union papers in his car as he was in a multi-racial local which was therefore probably a red union rather than a mob union. all of this was based on an illegal edict made by a president but it took 25yrs for the supreme court to strike it down. It had the effect of retarding progressive causes, weakening unions, public schools, health care, standard of living, et al. that was the purpose, fascism is an economic policy
