@discouniverse - How can you say this is boring? It may not be your preferred style of music, but that doesn't make it boring. This symphony actually blows my mind. Beethoven wrote this while he was DEAF! Writing very complex music without the ability to hear is unbelievable.
it doesn't say ... ( 1 week ago by discouniverse)
it doesn't say anything about the quality of sound...some parts are OK, but it still very average level of sound...you even cannot compare with Mozart's 40th symphony (btw the only genial composition of him)...van B doesn't have any beautiful or good composition...such quality sound nowadays can be found in almost any performer's CD, some performers in one album have all compositions more beautiful than this one old and boring

...boring? Who the hell said this was boring? This was Bernstein conducting this orchestra for the first Christmas the people of Berlin could celebrate together since the rise of the Wall. You can't sense that passion?

If you mean jazz or any music that has african influence, i can agree.. it can be classified as mere expression of lay men's quite primitive emotions, nothing close to the deep existencial background of the classical repertoire, especially of great German composers.

There is a truth in ... ( 3 days ago by skeetinmyhair)
There is a truth in what you say, but jazz is dance music, the blues is what is supposed to express emotion, while it is usually very depressing. I could listen to classical music all day and never get bored. This doesn't mean I am limited to only listen to classical music, I can listen to what I want, what I feel will best suit my mood at the time. Some modern rock songs are very good at expressing emotion, if you say, "What modern rock songs?" I would say, "Try listening to City & Colour."

Sure, every musical experssion can be valuable and I frequently listen to the different musical styles..but the only thing i wanted to emphasize in my previous post is that in terms of musical expression, colourfulness, depth, strength and other qualities, no other musical style can come close to classical music..We can say that musical creativity of mankind reaches its apotheosis in it
Why do we allways ... ( 2 days ago by elrony)
Why do we allways have to talk about this kind of music is better than this other one? Classical music (if you want to call it like that, in fact classical music is bad used term that sometimes people use to refer to every kind of music that has an orchestra, wich directly shows the ignorance some people have) is beatifull music, and so is rock and roll, jazz, blues, and every other music style. The fact is that "classical music" has expired long ago, we don't have now great classical music.
So, Rock and roll ... ( 2 days ago by elrony)
So, Rock and roll music took the stage now, 50 years ago, and people are still liking it, and still making fresh rock and roll music. It is about to die, I know. So is the cultural world. But the thing is that music was allways made for freedom, music is a language every composer has to express his feeling. Comparing musical styles is then like saying chinesse is a better language than french because it's more complex. So stop arguing and enjoy every style of music without thinking that much

Despite being ... ( 1 day ago by portoxali)
Despite being admirer of different musical genres, I could not agree with your relativistic argumentation..I think it should not be unimportant as what qialification we give to different things around us and I think that such simplistic worldview in its root is erroneous. Liberal thinking to its extreams, what 20 century relativism embodies, destorts the real understanding and thus proper evaluatation of phenomenas around us.
From your ... ( 1 day ago by portoxali)
From your argumentation, it follows that there is no qualitative differance between art of Leonardo and art of Chagal,Kandinsky or other great modern painters. Of course here we should say that the works of both artists are unique in themselves in terms of technical, conceptual or other aspects, however despite the fact that they both were enormously influencial in their epoch, still they can not be compared to the significance and contribution of Leonardo in the history and development of art..
As for comparing ... ( 1 day ago by portoxali)
As for comparing Chinese and French languages,I think we can't but a linguist can draw difference in terms of the complexity and other characteristics of one or another language and based on it can correctly argue for instance that Chinese language represents more significance linguistically and therefore he/she can admit that due to these factors it is better.
By the way, the ... ( 1 day ago by portoxali)
By the way, the application of the term "classical" while denoting the broad range of academic music, doesn't necessary mean ignornace but simply serves practical purposes as it has long become more easily associative with this musical direction in everyday language. To conclude my ideas, i would like here to add that discussing aesthetical issues is very vague and problematic business, therefore our argumentation can be insufficient and fragmentary in much respect..

beethoven never achieved any compositional brilliance, his work is all about volume and patheticness. I'll stuck with Bach or John Coltrane
How about his ... ( 1 day ago by portoxali)
How about his introduction of chorus and vocal part in the ninth symphony? As we know during that time it was the innovative step in the symphonical composition..
