Arthur C. Clarke presents this unusual documentary on the mathematical discovery of the Mandelbrot Set (M-Set) in the visually spectacular world of fractal geometry. This show relates the science of the M-Set to nature in a way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself. Dr. Mandelbrot in 1980 discovered the infinitely complex geometrical shape called the Mandelbrot Set using a very simple equation with computers and graphics.

i agree. they are complex because the knowledge of an emotion or of their own logic is different then to the next. humans can not understand where another human is coming from because they do not know the exact meaning, so their thoughts of what is being said can continue forever..that prob doesnt make sense

i think if you're interested in fractals it's easy to understand how an omnipotent creator and free will can both exist

I wonder if ... ( 5 months ago by smashingparadox)
I wonder if computer animators, programmers are using fractals to render trees and such. It would seem to make sense. Fractals are simple formulas or sets of rules, and the shorter the code the better when it comes to computing such things.
I don't know if they're already trying this, but I wonder if you can simulate the crashing of a wave or the flicker of a flame with fractal geometry. It's structure within chaos. Isn't that what fractals are all about?

this is great. That's exactly what I've experienced under the influence of natural psychedelics (morning glory seeds). fractals are everywhere in nature. even our consciousness is fractal. I've also experienced the infinite complexity of nature. changed my life

i'm sure you could find some good youtube videos on it.. i forgot what i meant about fractals, but i think it's just that you have to remember god is every time and place at once and time is just another dimension. just because he/she/it knew everything you were going to do when god created you, that doesn't mean that you're being controlled in any way or that you have no choices, its just that god knew every choice youd make when you were given free will?
which might be what ... ( 3 months ago by d3p3ch3mod3)
which might be what i meant about fractals... it seems random and is infinitely complex and unpredictable like a society with free will but you can change the codes around to try to get the sort of patterns you want and try to predict the results, except a timeless god would already know them. i guess im talking about chaos theory and the fact that choice is a factor in it

Yes they are - it can be used to draw all sorts of landscapes and I think it's used in realistic game environments. And yes about chaos, you can get 'fractal flames' which follow chaotic systems. Type in Apophysis on google, there's an awesome program for investigating fractal flames.

hey dude that sounds like a dumb thoery because you cant connect the big bang theory with the theory of infity dimensions and infite world of order in a sea of chaos.
good try thou, i guess

Yes, 3D graphics programs have been using fractals for generation of clouds and mountains for a long time. Even programs considered "primitive" by modern graphics, such a 3D Studio 2.5.
