you're right insurance companies can only be profitable if they don't pay for every little service. that's why insurance should only be for serious illnesses and injuries. right now through HMO's gov is forcing people to use insurance to pay for so many minor procedures that the only way for the ins companies to survive is to find ways to deny service for the expensive serious illnesses and injuries.

because insurance was used only for serious illnesses and injuries, it was, most importantly, affordable to everyone. doctors charge as much as they can if insurance covers everything because patients don't choose the doctor with the lowest costs. there is no incentive to keep costs low.

canada's healthcare plan is not only imperfect, it is seriously flawed. provinces and the federal gov are struggling to control their budgets and not increase taxes to pay for cost of gov run hc. canadians are going to illegal private hospitals and coming to legal u.s. private hospitals because they are fed up with the waiting lines.

How do you know what universal healthcare is like. Just because you read biased information about Canada doesn't mean that it is a bad idea. Even republican ideas are just intermediate steps to universal healthcare. Reducing costs and making mandates and forcing people to buy insurance is the same to me as paying the government for healthcare only it will be cheaper.You can't apply a profit system when it comes to a market where you are dealing with people's lives.

i read facts such as canadians waiting in long lines because of limited treatment and the gov spending billions of dollars in its efforts to reduce wait times. facts such as 1973 HMO act forcing businesses to buy insurance from gov approved HMO's. these are facts. please give me evidence that you can make gov mandates AND reduce costs. every instance throughout america's history that gov mandates something, costs RISE. taxes and limits on the amount of care to keep prices low is not the answer.

I'm saying that reducing costs and making mandates are what the republicans want to do instead of universal healthcare and I agree it is a dumb idea. By making healthcare universal it wipes out a lot of the profit system created by private insurance.

what are you proposing? keep in mind "profit" simply means being financially sustainable. a gov run hc system stays profitable by eliminating competition altogether, increasing taxes and limiting the amount of care, as in canada. the best way to get back the good hc system that america used to have is simply repeal the hmo act of 1973 and introduce competition b/w doctors and insurance companies, which will lead to reduced costs and increase in quality of care.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, during his term in the state senate,18 different laws came up and passed new mandates. Obama voted for all of them. This is part of the reason why many Americans can't afford healthcare. It would be better if one of the candidates offered healthcare that only covered the necessities. This maybe they can afford.
