I think the ultimate 'point' of WWI was that it saw the end of Imperial, aristocratic Europe.
Ninety years on Europe seems to be a far more peaceful and co-operative place. To this outsider, it seems like the British, Germans and French are today a 'family', with common interests and a few minor disagreements. For most of the past century, that wasn't quite the case. Perhaps WWI helped bring this about.
That said, you can't help but shed a tear and ask why when seeing a video like this.

This is very true. The Christmas truce of 1914 saw both sides in the conflict in sectors of the western fron come out of thir trenches. The only mistake you made was the American bit, the U.S didn't join the war until April 1917.
