the reason why stella leaves stanley in the movie is because there were restrictions on movies back then concerning moral issues. they were allowed to show rape, but then they have to present it as something that is punished, hence stella leaves stanley. in the play she stays.

I think standards are much lower these days, even in the acting community. I don't care if both Lange and Baldwin got Emmy and Golden Globe nominations with Lange winning the GG. There's such crap out these days that I suppose compared to it, this is art. But it's a far cry from what Brando and Leigh and Hunter and Malden did in the original "Streetcar".

This is just depressing to watch after viewing the original. Many local theatre companies could shoot out far better acting than this minus John Goodman. Lange goes completely over the top for the worse and Baldwin's performance is so amateur and forced with little to no depth in the character. Mediocore rendition at best.
