This promotional short for Irving Mills' short-lived Master and Variety labels not only gives us a glimpse of Ellington and his band in the actual Master/Variety studios (as opposed to a soundstage set), but is one of the very few film accounts of how records were recorded, plated and pressed in the long-ago age of analog, shellac and 78 rpm. Narration is provided by pioneer radio announcer Alois Havrilla.

They still make new LP's. Mostly I see older releases being re-issued on 180 grahm vinyl and Virgin Vinyl. I'm glad they are still making LP's. They just have a much warmer sound than digitally processed music.

I'm curious - what did they do with the stampers when they were done with them? Discard them? I am wondering how valuable those would be!

Agree. But by the time 45s came around, the recordings were mastered on tape instead of the lacquer discs (by 1948)....

This was during the period {March-June 1937} when Duke and his band recorded "exclusively" for Irving Mills' Master and Variety labels, although they were also issued on Brunswick [Ellington's label until 1939] at the same time. Incidentally, "Oh, Babe!" was NEVER recorded on Variety- it was actually recorded for Brunswick in February 1936. Ivie Anderson was Duke's "star vocalist" from 1932 through 1942....

If theres anything ... ( 7 months ago by RadioKilla07)
If theres anything that makes your listening pleasure worth while, its recording live onto the laquer. In this clip, the cutter heads of that time period didnt sound near as great as cutterheads in the 60's to this present day, just like anything as time went on, technology got better. LP's are still heavily manufactured today and is still considered the best form of medium when it comes to accuracy in sound playback reproduction.

unbelievable, every aspect of this is unbelievable. I actually have a few 78s in my house of Bunny Berigan. it's crazy to think that so many people were physically involved in the production of records. i think that's really the main point of this clip to a modern day audience, just all those hands doing all that stuff.

Very interesting, it seems as if the the record maufacturing process hasn't changed much between then and now. How far does record "stamping" go back? I heard that it goes back to the days of acoustic recording. Does anyone know if that's true?
