In fact the conflict is between whether the ghost is in fact Hamlet's father returned from heaven to ask Hamlet to avenge him, or if the ghost is an 'incubus', ie a demon from hell taking the form of old Hamlet to try and trick the prince into murdering Claudius, condemning him to hell.

I wouldn't say that Mel is young for this part. He was 35 in this movie, and Hamlet is suppose to be 20. But I really do think he's fit to play the part.
