In the spring of 1968, Richard Proenneke, 51 set off into the Alaskan wilderness to enjoy his retirement living in a backcountry cabin he crafted by hand. Over the next 35 years he lived here in solitude.

Solitude is not a sin. Dick Proenneke must have wanted it that way. Silence, peace and contententment knowing that he had accomplished exactly what he wanted. The sad thing is that noise, stress and business are the norm today. He must have been VERY HAPPY!I am happy he lived the way he wanted! =)

You have a point but you just go up there totally unprepared for what he was walking into. no proper clothes, gun or even a map he was just miles from help. I don't want to sound cruel but he kind of asked for it.

there are those who understand McCandless and those don't. I don't buy into calling him a hero or romanticizing his death, but he was intelligent, lived for himself and I have tremendous respect for him as an individual. Most people who critizise him seem to have this idea that he walked into the wilderness and died a stupid, pointless death. The facts are he lasted 100+ days before he died, which i think remarkable considering what he brought in. He didn't WANT a map. He didn't WANT security.

as an alaskan, i'd say you are as dead wrong as Chris. he took STUPID chances on account of an ego problem. If he had followed the advice given him by friendly alaskans, acted halfway like Mr Proenneke, he would probably be here now.
