Now is a great time (8/23/2008) to buy precious metal at a bargain with the price brought down by massive sell-offs. Demand is up and supply is out. Local shops in my hometown have no physical silver or gold to sell. The market will correct itself and demand for silver and gold will only continue to rise in the coming years. I hope that you're getting returns of over 15% because with M3 increasing at a faster pace than at any other time in history your dollars aren't gonna go very far.

I don't know, I mean yes, paper money is technically worthless, but by the same logic so is gold and silver. It's just shiny, people! What you need to stock up on are everyday items for barter. And I'd start learning about some basic skills like gardening and sewing as well.

Isn't that a little archaic? I mean, gold and silver hasn't been used to finance anything really on a normal/regular basis in common society since the 19th century. We don't use items like gold and silver to 'pay' for anything. It has value, yes, and those values are regulated anyway, so it can be devalued intentionally for another purpose so I really don't think it's wise to collect gold and silver. I do believe that a digital financial system based on points is possible instead.
