The Organ at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral was built by the Skinner Organ Company of Boston in 1931 as their Opus 820 and dedicated with great fanfare with a recital by Professor Palmer Christian of the University of Michigan, and a performance of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius. Ernest Skinner designed and oversaw the construction and installation of the organ at the Cathedral during his final years at the company he founded in 1901 before being forced out in 1936.
It is remarkable to think of all of the Skinner Organs that once were to be found in Toledo. However, with time and changing fashions, some people wanted to try to improve Skinner organs, but only managed to compromise their integrity. Mr. Skinner's organs are like the string instruments of Stradivarius; no improvements are needed! In the city of Toledo, after a time many of the "improved" and renovated organs were removed, leaving only two original Skinner Organs; the one at Rosary Cathedral and the newly restored organ at the Toledo Art Museum, Opus 603.
I first recorded Stuart Forster at Rosary Cathedral in 1998, and then later Todd Wilson and Ken Cowan. This organ is always a joy to visit, and the staff and clergy of the Cathedral are a joy to work with. This is a short video I made of Stephen Tharp recording the Rosary Cathedral organ on the ni
ght of August 31, 2006. The resulting CD will be a collection of much-loved hymns played on this organ. I hope you enjoy these video samples of the CD that will be issued in the winter of 2007. I'm certain that you will agree with me that this organ is truly an American treasure. You will note bett
er sound on these videos. I took the audio files from the sound I recorded for the CD and synchronized it with the video. I think you will appreciate the improvement. If you, my loyal and valued patrons, buy more of my Cds, this will allow me to buy a better camera and some lighting! I genuinely enj
oy making these videos, especially for those of you who cannot share in the hair-raising thrill of hearing these spectacular instruments in person. I am a firm believer in the majesty and beauty of the world's greatest pipe organs, and in the need to preserve and document them, as well as promot
e the incredibly gifted performers who know how to play them so effectively. These instruments and players deserve to be recognized, and I am pleased to serve as their advocate. With your help, we can assure the future of the great pipe organs of the world. My thanks to you for your continued sup
port! Visit the JAV Webstore at www.pipeorgancds.com; there you will find over 70 different titles of organ recordings from around the world Now get ready to enjoy my latest video! Joe Vitacco - JAV Recordings, Inc. http://www.pipeorgancds.com ---------------- From the organist: Tonight I
finished a CD recording of hymns, both familiar and unfamiliar, at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio. This is the first full-length hymn disc that I have done, and having the opportunity to bring it into fruition on this particular Skinner organ made for an incredibly artistic result and a most
memorable experience. On this video, I play Comfort, comfort Ye my People and The Strife is O'er. The sound from the recording session itself is matched up here with the video made during actual takes. This will be my fourth disc for JAV Recordings, and my thirteenth CD recording-to-date. I am
very grateful to Joe Vitacco and JAV for asking me to make this recording on such a rare, beautiful and noteworthy instrument. Stephen Tharp.

Is the CD out yet? Thanks also for showing the magnificent interior of Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. I have seen all of the Ohio Catholic Cathedrals and this is the most stunning of them all!

I emailed JAV last week and received a prompt but terse reply : "not yet".
This clip is arguably the best combination of organ, organist and recorded sound quality on YouTube. Tharp apparently knows that "Heavy Organ" is not the approach to take with a fine vintage Skinner.

JAV, the restraint in your reply is very admirable! It show class! I enjoy all kinds/periods of organ building--some more than others--even theatre organs! Bless you.

I think what Jv is ... ( 8 months ago by octave4)
I think what Jv is saying - The skinner organs were the epitome of the Romantic instrument produced in the US. The French style was best from Welte, Kimball, Hilgren Lane, M.P. Moller and Casavant.
Harrison did bring radical change to all organ buiulding. He did restore the clasic tonal structure with the English touch.

Carpenter is a lot of flash. Fast playing and keyboard tricks. Technically he is excellent. But he will not play requests and does not seem to ;ay the slower classics. But he is, without doubt, a very good player.

If one has had the life-altering experience of hearing great hymnody at venues such as St. Paul's Cathedral, London or St. Thomas in New York City, one is immediately aware of the grandeur necessary for these great tunes in large spaces. This is music, not MTV. It's very sad to see grown adults who can't hear the difference.

Real, real substance takes more than magic acts. Let's distinguish between a good artist and a good show, shall we? Pop culture we are not after several hundred years.
Boy can I agree ... ( 8 months ago by octave4)
Boy can I agree with that. In Korea they have absolutely no idea of even the fundamentals of preparations and presentation of a recital and they play like machines. There Carpenter is technically adept the performances seem too much flash. He has the basics but not the Class that Fox has and his manager says "He's better". I didn't want to reply to that. I grew up with the Greats and the current crop is a far cry from professional.

Do you notice how the big Pedal Reeds blend in so nicely with the Pedal Flues without hearing the rattle of the reeds as so often in the Euro and new-baroque organs. Smooth, full, powerful. Such a shame so many people thought they were smarter than Skinner and destroyed so many organs. Shame on the Tracker backers.

Indeed, E M Skinner is a famous Romantic builder. My understanding from the opening monologue is that this is a CD of chorales, so a video promoting chorales was the idea.

Began my first organ lessons on an Ernest Skinner. This era of organ building is gone, but thank goodness it's art is alive in instruments like these.
No, it's not a trendy neo-classical instrument, but it will play a service better than any of those, as well as tons of literature.
Superbe~!

I totally agree with your statement. Simply this instrument is majestic. A commanding presence.

There is no way around the fact this organ is spectacular. Nobody was better than Ernest M. Skinner at the craft of organ building. If only one could be given the opportunity to study his methods.

I purchased this CD as soon as I received the e-mail announcement, and I am thrilled beyond words! I love to hear and play the old hymns. In fact, I had recorded my own CD (on a much more modest instrument) and distributed it to parishioners. This JAV recording has some of the same hymns, but there is no comparison. Psalm 150 comes to mind.

That Comfort Comfort Ye My People, I sit here in awe at that powerful organ. He has done this song great Justice. Very well played. I would have preferred a bit slower, but the way he ended that last verse it didn't matter to me anymore how slow it was. God has done good. Amen
