More from my "NightLife Show" which ran on local cable TV in FL from 1980-1986. This condensed episode features the dawn of sound movies. Shown is "The Voice from the Screen" (1926) showing how the Vitaphone system worked. Then, a promo trailer for "The Jazz Singer" (1927) which is considered to be the 1st talking movie.
NOTE: I recently added the full-length version of the Hawaiian song by Witt & Berg as seen in this show. Look towards more recent entries of mine.
Original Air Date: May 14, 1982.

There was no talking in the PREVIEW, showing the one clip of the Jazz Singer.

Yes...thats correct. Only the narrator spoke in the preview. Thats the way it was shown from Warners. In fact, over 90% of The Jazz Singer is "silent" with synced music. There were just a few scenes with Al singing & dancing.

Really nice. Thanks. I'm a big fan of the Vitaphone shorts that play from time to time at the Film Forum in NYC. They are restored and beautiful. You clip with the man explaining the technology is very nice. I hadn't seen that before.

Thanks! I love the Vitaphone shorts too. The entire clip with the man explaining would take 3-YouTube segments as he talks so slow! I also have the clip that has the two fellows singing which I hope to post soon. Thanks for watching!

Merci! I have loads of old films and tapes. I tried to show as many as possible on my old "NightLife Show". When I started copying this stuff for YouTube, a number of my old films had dried so bad, they won't show anymore. Some of my videotapes are gone too. Only the soundtrack plays! I've collected old films since I was 16 and this kills me!

I love THX DTS and Doldy Digital but my true passion is with vitaphone, I envy anyone who has gotten the chance to sit in a theatre and expirience this gem, its so simple but very effective

why don't you talk about "singin' in the rain"?

The NightLife Shows you see here are from 20 years ago. This one is 1982. "Singing in the Rain" is a favorite of mine! Except for an occaisonal special, like the recent shuttle launch, my NightLife Shows are out of production. Great idea...wished I had done one about that. I do have a Vitaphone copy - somewhere - of those 2 guys singing the Hawaiian song. I just have to find it.

I believe the singing duet in the 1926 footage were the same pair that made a series of discs for Cameo Records at the time as "Salt & Pepper".

Synchronizing the ... ( 1 year ago by azqrlaf)
Synchronizing the record was so difficult that the system was scrapped after a few years. And if the film broke and you lost a few frames, it wouldn't sync at all. All this had been tried many time before this. It wanst any good then either, but the gimic this time was that electrical amplification had been invented, and warner's was broke and had nothing to lose.

"When I started copying this stuff for YouTube, a number of my old films had dried so bad, they won't show anymore. Some of my videotapes are gone too. Only the soundtrack plays! I've collected old films since I was 16 and this kills me!" That's sad to know Kerry. Any way you know to restore them? And thanks for making the effort to restore these timeless films for modern viewers to see and appreciate.

Unfortunately, no. When I open some of the cans of film...they are nothing but a blob fused together. Totally gone. I have some old original film I shot of Robert Kennedy in the 1960s & I haven't checked yet to see if its OK. I hope so! (If it is, it will be uploaded here. Stay tuned!)
Once they start to ... ( 8 months ago by HartfordTommy)
Once they start to go the process is unstoppable. I've found that the reaction is sort of catalytic; sealed in cans, the destruction is assured. To save films--ventilate them before they begin to go smelly. Store them dust-free, but in open air, and ventilate. Better: store them in the freezer, in vapor proof ziplock bags. I have Edison Home Kinetoscope prints of 1911-14 that I froze in 1980, and keep in the deep freeze. They've stayed the same ever since.

I know how you feel, bud. I've lost a few to age myself (both video and film) - But keep showing us what you have - I guess I fell on the cusp between film and the video revolution and I prefer film - but I work now in video. And now...the dreaded Digital age is upon us!

do you have any COLOR footage of Roseland Park from Canadaigua NY? I'm working on a book about Haunted house attractions and the Gold Nugget was one that inspired it (back between 1969 and 1985)
