Actually he doesn't, the visuals are out of sync with the sound. So it appears that he uses one gesture for two chords. Great performance by the musicians anyway. Is there an orchestra that plays with that kind of commitment anymore?

What a fantastic video, shame it gets a bit out of sync towards the end but enjoyable none the less.
I was fortunate enoughto see Karajan and the berlin Phil play this in london circa 1987. By this stage the maestro was suffering acute back problems which severely restricted his movement, nevertherless, as with all karajan concerts, it was afabulous occasion.
This video brings back memories of a wonderful evening.

No, Karajan doesn't do that... its just that the picture and sound get out of sync, so that the picture is one bar ahead of the sound at the end.
