Personally, I think she sounds a bit strained on the higher notes and has to overcome her difficulty by singing louder than ideal. In my opinion, the Cox Family does a better version. That's not to say this one is bad - I like the somewhat unusual instrumentation of The Chieftains (unusual for what is essentially a country ballad, that is). "T.B. Ranson song", by the way? I thought this was a traditional song with no known author.

Martina does a wonderful job with this beautiful old song. The announcer here says it's an 1879 waltz and you can tell by the words that it is from older days - which I love. I read that some people think A.P. Carter wrote this song and a lot of songs - but didn't - that he made popular but if this one was written in 1879 it wasn't written by him because he wasn't born till 1891. I keep watching this beautiful video, not only to hear Martina's fabulous voice but also to hear the musicians. Such a large variety of instruments the Chieftains play. Is that a Pan flute the musician is playing? It's such a sweet sound . I'd love to know what the other instrument is laying on his lap while he's playing the flute. I've seen him play that one on another video from that Grand Ole Opry show. Martina does have a high range but, for me, the song carries itself. Thanks so much.

Here I am posting again - however, I keep wondering if the gentleman doing the harmony with Martina is Phil Collins. Whether or not he's a Chieftains' member I don't know but it looks somewhat like him in the profile we see and his voice is so like Phil's - I think. Thank you for any information. Incidentally, this song by Martina is on our American Legion Post juke box and is one of the most popular songs played there. -Paula

Thanks jk for your comment. I did look up the names of all The Chieftains and the gentleman harmonizing with Martina isn't Phil. I love Phil Collins' voice and he sounds a lot like him - to me. He probably has never done country I suppose. Thanks again. I am addicted to this song by Martina. :-) -Paula

The guy harmonizing with her is Jeff White, a bluegrass musician who has played with Alison Kraus, Vince Gill, and others, and was a performer on this Chieftains CD. He is not a member of the Chieftains.
