Often when there is mental illness, closely asociated is extreme creativity. Because there aren't the same mental barriers as a "normal" person, and the creativing bursts forth for people like Daniel as a couping mechanism. This is unfortunate because those same lacking mental barriers often means the person in question asks is destructive to self or otherwise. That behaviour is what get the people locked up, society needs to better facilitate people with mental illness.

I've seen a lot of argument over this man's music; most of it very polar. Surely he could be something in between a twisted genius, and a talentless nut. Personally, I think that his music uses strange imagery, which is usually perceived as poetic because, why would you say "don't play cards with Satan, he'll deal you an awful hand" unless he meant something more by it, and I think that he does, but I doubt that he know what that is.
