tech is not ideal, opening up way to early, should hold his back and drive with the legs and not open up so early..
form the looks of the tech i get the impression he sits in the middle of a 4 or 8

hahaha how stupid, do you see how his shoulders end up still "in front"!
You must pull first with the shoulders!

in ref to my statement,
1) you should never pull. You push 2) by opening up you transfer the work from the lower body to the upper body, i dont know about you but i can leg press far far more then i can lift with my arms 3) you want to hold the body so that you get a full leg drive, only opening up towards the end. by
doing this you help keep a constent speed in the boat and prevent it from slowing down / speeding up to much which in itself wastes power

many oarsmen have been successful using this method however far more have reached the top rowing by not opening up at the start of the stroke

All good points, ... ( 2 months ago by mortsubite333)
All good points, however your technique also depends on what type of boat you're rowing. Sweep rowers on a whole tend to separate their movements a little more, holding their back in place until the legs are down. Scullers on the other hand usually blend the movements a bit more, sacrificing a little power in favor of a more fluid motion. This translates to less unwanted movement or bobbing in the boat and overall more speed.

No he's not, he may be coaching at TRC but it is no longer a high performance centre for women and he not coaching any national squad boats. If this is what lubo thinks is good technique no wonder Thames are in a big mess. The is no focus on getting the swing from the hips all of "adams" range is coming from reaching his back (so he can say goodbye to his discs quite soon).

Hi, thanks for the ... ( 2 months ago by doosport)
Hi, thanks for the note. I should point out that this is intended for someone who doesn't know much about technique on the erg, ie most people in gyms. If you row I'm sure you know better as this is me 6 weeks into my novice year. As for TRC yes we need to do much better! Adam

I'm considerably short for the sport so my strokes are shorter than most. I have to make up for it in stroke rate, right?
power and stroke ... ( 1 month ago by kellieur)
power and stroke rate, not just a high rate, if you are on a rowing machine watch your split time, you can get this down by increasing the power of each stroke and by increasing the stroke rate.

Well, I joined a gym today and tomorrow I'm going to hit the rowing machine and now I have a good idea of what I should be doing. Thanks!

Naaaah, you gotta learn to lengthen your stroke! That's like saying I'm a boxer but I have short arms, should I just punch faster to make up for it? It's all about form. Exaggerate your lean at the back of the stroke for a start :)
