Music is in safe hands, understand your feelings. God bless her. Carnatic music is in good hands now. People realize its importance and significance. Our simplicity is always a bliss. You should be a proud grandfather. In fact you should be thank your son and your daughter in law.

My understanding (and I honestly am in no position of expertise) is that it more closely resembles the position of other string instruments played with bows, which had played a part in earlier music. I can't remember the name of the instrument I am thinking of, though.
Many Scandinavian fiddlers also continue play the fiddle in their traditional position, with the violin sticking out from their torso. Different reason, though -- a fiddle without a chinpiece is not comfortable on the chin. :[

I dearly love the Carnatic violin.
FWIW, it does offer ...( 3 months ago by ShootMyMonkey)
FWIW, it does offer some advantages, but the main one is a relaxed position for the hand and wrist to do detailed motions. In Carnatic music, the definition of a note is not just pitch, but a shape/motion. In a Western frame, the pitch slides and forms you see would be considered advanced, but for Indian music, it's essential.
When the violin was first brought to India, it was held and played in a Western style initially, and as techniques advanced, this position was adopted after a few decades.
