More of the 1926-'27 Hot Style jazz from Jelly Roll Morton. These cuts were made for Victor Records-the company wanted into the "race records" business and Jelly Roll capitalized on that need by forming his Red Hot Peppers in 1926. Those '26-'27 Chicago recordings set the standard for decades. The Black Bottom was the new dance craze of the middle 1920s.

Your video is super, such great timing and the jazz is driving me crazy. I think I've discovered a Goldmine on your channel. Just one more daiquiri tonight because dancing makes me very thirsty and I am a good girl after all... And one more thing,
Somerset 45, you are adorable. I love your pointy ears!

I've heard (and played) re-creations of this recording, and NOTHING compares with the original... the drive they exhibit as Jelly comes out of his piano solo (1:45-1:53) is nothing short of astonishing! The last chorus is great, too.

There are countless versions of this music-but I posted this one because I agree that nothing compares with the JRM original. Thanks for your comment! (And thanks to the un-named collector who loaned me this near perfect 78 to post)

thank you so much ... ( 3 months ago by jgraif)
thank you so much for this. the photo collage is wonderful and clearly required much effort. i have heard it said so often that performances in the early 20th century were "reserved" by today's standards. well...they maintained a very strict tempo throughout the whole thing and did not venture "outside" the key in which they were playing (i believe it was b-flat), but the inventiveness of the playing is decidedly top drawer. jelly roll was unique!!
