What's the point of a Nuke we can't fire without the Americans permission, the presidents codes and it takes 72hours to program?
Lets be honest, spend the money on hospitals, and if Britian gets Nuked, let the Americans retaliate, because either they will nuke the other guys back and cause armageddon, or they'll refuse to tell us how the missiles work and we'll have wasted the money after all.

While one submarine is on deterrent patrol at all times there are normally two or three at sea (the others are in transit, training, trials etc)

Like it matters if Britain has a Nuclear deterant. If any nukes are launched anywhere at anyone, the Americans will retaliate in the pursuit of justice. It's called mutually assured destruction (MAD for short... hehe). Britain is pretty much covered by all the countrys in the UN anyway.

the way i see it is that america is the dominant party in the anglo-american alliance ever since ww2, although blair took this to new hights..
what the americans now want is that britain ties its fate to the usa. that way the alliance will surely be dominated by the white house.
what i want to say is that america wants to become a major part in the national security equation of the uk, regardless of who sits at no 10. this would greatly affect the uk's future decisions in regards to china russ

Korea: UN mandate, 6 UN countries.
Vietnam: American only, Brits new better than to get involved.
Argentina: British only, American's refused to give ANY help or let us use their bases to even refuel.
Gulf War: UN Mandate, several other countries involved, US wanted to quit as soon as possible.
There is no alliance, just Bush and Blair warmongering. This 'alliance' was purely conceited ambition.
