Stokowski was a freak of nature; a curious batonless non-musical showman who should have been top of the bill in P.T. Barnum's Travelling Circus.
Yes, Stokowski was ... ( 5 months ago by Edelweiss1424)
Yes, Stokowski was a showman but he was also a musical force-- with an uncanny sense of music and the emotional power of music. His style of conducting emphasizing emotion at the cost of technical accuracy was once accepted practice in 19th century Europe and has long since died out. Before you call someone so famously identified with good music (for so long) a freak, please investigate more thoroughly. Unless you are a total automaton, you may find something you like!
Stokowski was ... ( 5 months ago by PercyAGrainger)
Stokowski was unmatched in conjuring sonority from seemingly whatever ensemble he fronted during his 60 plus years on the podium. If his interpretive standards vary from those of our own age, bear in mind that this is a musician born in 1882, and who absorbed the lessons of romantic-era music making from near the source. He did more for the contemporary music of his time than did any other active-in-America conductor. hillwills attack is unwarranted and ill-informed.

I think Maestro Stokowski recorded Nielsen's Symphony No. 4, The Inextinguishable. This is also great.

The great Otto Klemperer, who was nobody's fool, stated in an interview that he thought Fritz Reiner, Herbert Von Karajan, Pierre Boulez and Leopold Stokowksi were very good conductors. He found Mengelberg and Krauss phonies, Szell too prissy, and generally didn't have much esteem for many others, but he liked Stokowski. Nobody got as great a sound from an orchestra. Klemperer said that his Philadelphia Orchestra was one of the "wonders of the world."

Yes, he did a lot for contemporary music. He even premiered Varese's Arcana and Ameriques.

No, not No. 4, which he never conducted, but No. 6 Sinfonia Semplice, which has been issued on a BBC Legends CD.
